Do you have a teen who needs to learn about Shakespeare but you find it dry, intimidating, and maybe even a little boring? There’s nothing wrong with your teen - Shakespeare was never meant to be read in a classroom! Join us this winter semester for the wit, romance, mistaken identities, and delightful chaos of Twelfth Night, as teens learn about the Bard’s work the way that it was intended - on the stage.

Separated from her twin brother Sebastian in a shipwreck, Viola disguises herself as a boy, calls herself Cesario, and becomes a servant to the Duke Orsino. He sends her to woo the Countess Olivia on his behalf, but the Countess falls in love with Cesario. Eventually Sebastian turns up and causes even more confusion and chaos in one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies.

Adapted and directed by Alexandra Rovirosa and supported by our unique Teen Mentorship program, students will dive into Shakespeare’s language, learning to analyze and dissect the text, uncover character motivations, explore themes, and discover how the words on the page translate into compelling performances onstage. Through interactive exercises, scene work, and acting techniques specifically suited to performing Shakespeare, students will build confidence, strengthen their understanding of classical theatre, and develop the skills needed to bring complex characters to life.

Throughout the eighteen weeks, students will experience the full rehearsal process, from observing the work of the very best Shakespearean actors and character exploration to blocking, memorization, scene work, and polishing the final production. They will learn the importance of collaboration, ensemble work, discipline, and creative problem-solving while working together toward a shared artistic goal.

The class culminates in two live performances on May 7-8th, 2027, giving students the opportunity to showcase their hard work and share the magic of Shakespeare with a live audience.

Whether students are seasoned performers or discovering Shakespeare for the first time, this production class offers an exciting opportunity to grow as actors, readers, and storytellers while experiencing the thrill of bringing a full theatrical production to the stage.

All enrolled students will have a speaking part in the show. Our first rehearsal will consist of auditions, where students will be able to learn the process of reading from a script (or what we call a cold read) in front of a director, and are encouraged to have a monologue prepared to perform for the director and class.

There will be a form when you enroll that asks about conflicts during the rehearsal process. Please note that we have a strict policy that no conflicts are accepted for Tech/Dress rehearsals and performances, except for cases of emergency. We understand that issues come up that can’t be avoided in life, but we ask that you thoroughly list all conflicts with the class schedule in your initial form, and that to the best of your ability, no other conflicts come up during the duration of classes.

Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-8:30pm, with two or three potential Saturday morning classes depending on rehearsal needs such as fight choreography, or in case of weather cancellations (dates and times will be announced with at least two weeks advance notice). Tech/Dress Rehearsal week will be May 3rd-6th, and will be from 6pm-9pm.

Cast shirts available as separate purchase, an email will be sent out with the link after enrollment.

Homeschool Education Credit: Homeschooling families in Missouri will be able to count class and rehearsal hours toward English and Literary Arts credits. The in-depth text analysis, study of Shakespearean language, character development, and literary themes provide valuable educational opportunities alongside practical theatre experience. Families should confirm credit requirements with their homeschool program or educational authority. A syllabus and hours tracker will be available to help parents track hours for documentation.
