The Miracle Worker tells the unforgettable true story of Helen Keller and her determined teacher, Annie Sullivan—a fierce clash of wills that blossoms into one of the most moving partnerships ever portrayed on stage. Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, young Helen is violent and spoiled, treated by her family as subhuman. Only Annie sees a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from Helen's dark, tortured silence. After scenes of intense physical and emotional struggle, Helen's breakthrough finally arrives with the utterance of a single, glorious word: "water." Immortalized by Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, this Tony Award-winning play captures the power of perseverance, communication, and the human spirit.

Through A Place For Us Productions’ unique mentorship program, teen actors will have the opportunity to learn side-by-side with our seasoned teen performers—observing their process, sharpening technique, and building confidence through collaboration. Under the direction of Alexandra Rovirosa, students will explore the emotional truth, physical storytelling, and professional rehearsal discipline that define master craftsmanship in theatre. All enrolled students will have a speaking part in the show.

Our first rehearsal will consist of auditions, where students will be able to learn the process of reading from a script (or what we call a cold read) in front of a director, and get to work on group reads with other students. Students are asked to come prepared with a monologue of their choice, whether it’s a speech from their favorite book, film, or play, or they can choose something from a website such as this one here.

The teens will have an opportunity to fill out a form sharing a little bit about themselves and the roles they are (or aren’t!) interested in, to help us gauge their experience and comfort level (although we can’t promise that everyone will get the role they want!) The cast list will be emailed by the next day.

There will be a form when you enroll that asks about conflicts during the rehearsal process. Please note that we have a strict policy requiring teen students to be at all tech/dress rehearsals and performance dates except for cases of emergency. We understand that issues come up that can’t be avoided in life, but we ask that you thoroughly list all conflicts with the class schedule in your initial form, and that to the best of your ability, no other conflicts come up during the duration of classes.

Whether your goal is to grow as an artist, challenge yourself creatively, or simply be part of a story that moves audiences to their feet, this class offers the space to rise, learn, and connect.
